Burano Lacemaking!

After visiting Murano, I traveled to Burano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon. The houses were brightly painted; the colors of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development. For example, if someone wanted to paint their home, they would have to send a request to the government.

I was able to watch an old woman fabricate lace. In the small shop, I viewed hand initialed lace napkins, lace baby clothing and lace garters.

My favorite lace shop was Emilia Burano, a store and workshop that has been open for three generations. All of the tapestries, bedding, napkins, runners and table linens were beautiful and excellently crafted by artisans of Burano.
